Welcome to Balcones Heights, home of the largest Super Target in the Southwest, Dave & Busters, Crossroads Mall and Convention Center, TexSan Heart Hospital and the new home of the annual Cowboy Breakfast which attracts over 60 thousand people for the one day event.

Unique among the 20 suburbs in the Bexar County area, Balcones Heights was incorporated in 1948. Located at the intersection of Loop 410 and Interstate 10, Balcones Heights is accessible to all parts of Bexar County within a reasonable time. Balcones Heights is a pear-shaped city of .7 square mile, which makes it one of the smallest suburbs in the area.

Easily accessible to downtown San Antonio on the IH-10 Highway, the City is fast becoming a mecca for new businesses. Boasting a Crime Control District, the City built a 3.5 million dollar state-of-the-art Justice Center at 3300 Hillcrest.

Balcones Heights also hosts the largest VIA Park & Ride facility located next to the mall. An estimated 2,700 bus riders and 205,000 passenger vehicles pass through the City on a daily basis.

VIA
UPDATE

Now that the furor over Council’s decision to investigate the possibility of
calling for a referendum on whether or not to opt out of VIA and use the revenue to fix the infrastructure of the City has subsided temporarily, an update is in order.

In January and February the Council held two public forums on the issue. Bus riders, non-bus riders, residents, non-residents, business owners and anyone who believed they would be impacted by the effects of opting out of VIA as the source for public transportation, attended. They expressed fear that disabled bus riders and others would somehow be disenfranchised by the move. From the City’s perspective, that was not the case. The City was not only looking at revenue sources but looking into the possibility of offering alternative public transportation. Once the Council voted unanimously to shelf the idea, a number of residents took a petition to the voters and obtained the legally required number of signatures for a referendum to be placed on a September ballot. By law, the City must now call for a special election to decide the outcome. Since Balcones Heights is now aware that it has an escrow account with VIA to address the City’s infrastructure, it is up to the VIA Board to approve funding for a number of projects within the City.

TEXSAN HEART HOSPITAL LIVES

The very highly anticipated opening of Texsan Heart Hospital became a reality in January. The hospital is a $60 million licensed acute-care facility designed to provide "World-Class cardiovascular care", according to its owners, MedCath Corp. and a partnership of local doctors.
